What Does Certified Organic Mean?

Certified organic food in Canada, such as organic Ambrosia apples, must meet all Canadian food regulations as well as additional organic standards and inspections. These standards – the rules and regulations about how organic product and processing must be done – are national and function under the auspices of the Canadian General Standards Board and the Canadian Organic Office which is under the auspices of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Someone wishing to grow organic Ambrosia must apply to a certification body operating under the above supervision. No prohibited products can be used on the land for a minimum of three years before certification is approved. The grower must use a holistic production method that contributes to the enhancement of biodiversity and good soil health. The use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms (GMOS), irradiation, growth hormones, artificial colours and preservatives are not allowed.

Every year there is an inspection of the farm by an arms length trained inspector. Handling of the fruit beyond the farm gate must also be done in a way that does not use prohibited products or allow for co-mingling with conventional fruit.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR?

Look for a label on the fruit or on the box it is in that identifies it as organic. Look for the Canadian Organic logo or the BC Check mark plus the name of the certifying body.
